Cops pose as passengers, collect Rs 8 lac in penalty from errant auto drivers

Bengaluru: The city traffic police, who posed as passengers approached auto drivers for rides and collected Rs 8 lakh in penalty from errant drivers.
The crackdown started at 11 am and ended by dusk.
Over 250 police personnel participated in the drive and 1,575 drivers were booked for refusing to ply to the destinations mentioned by the police decoys. Nearly 1,346 auto drivers were booked for overcharging,  2,282 cases were registered for various offences such as not having driving licence, not displaying driver details in the vehicle and not wearing a uniform, among others.
Speaking on the issue, Joint commissioner of police (traffic) BR Ravikantegowda said the drive was conducted following an increase in complaints against auto drivers.
“Police personnel, including women, in mufti were deployed at important junctions in the three traffic divisions. They were told to flag down auto drivers and engage them for rides. Cases were booked against drivers who behaved rudely,” he added.
