Customs seize gold hidden in bicycle in Kerala airport

Despite the customs department tightening its grip on illegal gold smuggling through Calicut international airport here, officials on Saturday detected an ingenious method of concealment of the yellow metal.

The passenger concealed the gold under the seat of a bicycle he brought from Dubai, customs sources said.

The spring under the cycle seat was found to be made of yellow metal, weighing over a kilogram. However, the customs detected it during thorough examination of the cycle.

A case has been registered against Abdul Sherif, native of Edakulam, in connection with the seizure and investigation is on, they said.

Some customs officials, including a superintendent, were suspended for conniving with the racket for facilitating gold smuggling recently.
