Mangaluru: Cyclone Fengal’s effects are being felt in Coastal Karnataka districts, with heavy rains lashing the region since Monday evening.

In Mangaluru, there were reports of flooding on many roads, including Kottara Chowki, leading to traffic snarls during evening rush hours.

The sea in Ullal remains turbulent as thunderstorms and heavy rain continued through Monday evening, leading to property damage in several areas.

In Naringana village’s Nethilapadavu, the house of Deepavati Praveen sustained significant damage. Meanwhile, in Boliyar’s Rantadka area, a landslide has placed Jameela’s house in a precarious position.

Residents are urged to exercise caution as the region braces for further challenges due to the unpredictable weather conditions.

Fishing Boats Return to Shore Amid Rough Seas

Malpe: Severe wind and turbulent waves in the Arabian Sea have forced fishing boats to retreat to the shore. Large waves caused by strong winds prevented purse seine, small trawl boats, and traditional fishing vessels from venturing into the sea since Sunday.

Some deep-sea fishing boats have sought refuge at nearby ports, including Karwar. Boats that had previously returned after completing their catch have remained docked. On Monday, all purse seine and traditional boats at Malpe port suspended fishing activities, leaving the shores bustling with idle vessels.

The wind direction shifted from northwest on Sunday to southeast on Monday, blowing at speeds of 50-60 km/h. The impact is more pronounced in the deep sea, and the weather forecast predicts continued wind pressure until Wednesday.

Precautions in Dakshina Kannada

In a meeting at the Zilla Panchayat auditorium, senior officials and taluk officers provided updates on the natural calamity through video conferencing. Khader directed officials to warn residents near hilly areas to avoid staying in their homes for the next two days. He also emphasized readiness with necessary equipment to tackle issues related to roads and electricity.

Khader instructed authorities to advise resorts against hosting tourists during the calamity. If any lives are lost due to negligence, strict action will be taken against the resort owners.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan, Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal, Zilla Panchayat CEO Dr. Anand, and SP Yathish, among others.

Meanwhile, District-in-Charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao directed officials to implement preventive measures and remain prepared for any eventualities. The IMD has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall across the district, urging readiness for potential challenges.
