India’s D. Gukesh created history on Thursday, December 12, by winning the World Chess Championship in Singapore. The 18-year-old prodigy defeated China’s Ding Liren to become the youngest-ever world chess champion.

Gukesh clinched the title after winning the 14th and final game in the classical time format, finishing with a 7.5-6.5 score.

He is only the second Indian to achieve this prestigious title, following in the footsteps of chess legend Viswanathan Anand.
