Dandeli: On-duty cop attacked, injured during procession; One arrested

Dandeli: An on-duty policeman was attacked and injured allegedly by a sword-wielding youth during a procession on the city’s Link Road on August 15 evening.
The accused, identified as Abhishek, a resident of Sai Nagar has been arrested and is being interrogated. The injured has been identified as Devappa Hosamani, a police constable.
The incident occurred during the Sangolli Rayanna procession was organized on Tuesday evening under the auspices of the city’s Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna Abhimaani Balaga.
Along with other police personnel, Devappa had been deputed for security arrangements. According to sources, the youth suddenly attacked Devappa with a sword as the procession made its way from KC Circle to wards Link Road.
Police at the scene immediately restrained the youth and took him into custody.
An injured Devappa was rushed to a local hospital for first aid. Due to the head injury, he will be taken to Dharwad for further treatment, sources said.
Higher police officials including DySP Shivananda Katagi, and CPI Bheemanna M. Suri, visited the hospital and are coordinating investigations.
Meanwhile, a case has been registered at the city police station.
