Darbar Review: This ‘Darbar’ is only for Rajini’s fans

Darbar, directed by AR Murugadoss, stars superstar Rajinikanth portraying the role of Aadhithya Arunachalam, a super-cop who gets appointed as the Commissioner of Mumbai police who does not need anyone’s approval to do anything and calls himself as a ‘villain.’

The film has two storylines, one, wherein the lead are on a lookout for a  drug cartel run by Ajay Malhotra (Pratiek Babbar) and another, wherein, his daughter Valli (Nivetha Thomas) and Kaushik (Yogi Babu) try to find a bride for him. Both the stories get connected in the second half when Hari Chopra (Suniel Shetty) comes to take revenge.

Even though the charisma of Rajinikanth is intact, the plot is centered around the lead actor that lacks substance and logic many times. We liked the comedy portions of Yogi Babu and Rajinikanth who chase the latter’s love interest Lily (Nayanthara).

Nivetha Thomas’ performance as a caring daughter is applaudable. Nayanthara’s screen presence is less in the movie and it seems like she was roped into the film to please the audience. The performances of Bollywood actors Suniel Shetty, Pratiek Babbar as anthologists are below par.

The makers of the film concentrated more on showcasing Rajinikanth and his mannerisms in the film than working on the screenplay.

This film is purely made for Rajnikanth’s fans.
