Delhi Zoo’s lone African elephant, Shankar, is finally experiencing a new lease on life. After years of being chained, the 28-year-old elephant was freed on October 11, the forest department said.
This marks a significant step towards enhancing Shankar’s health and well-being, following growing concerns about his solitary existence and restrictive living conditions.
Shankar, who has been housed at the Delhi Zoo since 1996, had been living alone ever since his companion, Bambai, passed away in 2005. The elephant’s condition sparked international concern, leading to the suspension of the Delhi Zoo’s membership by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) earlier this week.
Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Kirti Vardhan Singh took prompt action, bringing together experts from various fields to ensure Shankar’s rehabilitation.
A vital part of the team was Team Vantara, a wildlife facility of the Reliance Group based in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Their specialists, alongside international veterinary experts, worked closely to address Shankar’s physical and mental well-being.
Kirti Vardhan Singh, shared a video of the elephant ‘Shankar’ on his social media handle on X stating, “Following my visit to the zoo on 9th October and meeting with ‘Shankar’, the lone African elephant, we brought together the Ministry of Environment, Team Vantara from Jamnagar and the expert veterinary doctors. I am happy to share that ‘Shankar’ is finally free from chains. Thanks to the relentless efforts of the team—that includes Neeraj, Yaduraj, Dr. Adrian from South Africa, Michael from the Philippines —rehabilitation is progressing as per the action plan.”

For the next few days, Shankar’s behavior will continue to be monitored, and a specialized care plan is being developed. The zoo’s mahouts will receive training to ensure smooth interactions with him. Additionally, a personalized diet and activity schedule is being tailored to suit Shankar’s needs, ensuring he remains physically and mentally stimulated.
Shankar’s story has touched the hearts of many, and his improved condition is a hopeful sign for his future. In a promising development, Botswana has also offered to provide a female companion for Shankar, ensuring that he will not remain alone for much longer.
