Diamonds worth Rs 1.69 cr confiscated at MIA

Mangaluru: Diamonds worth Rs 1.69 crores were confiscated from a passenger at Mangaluru International Airport.

The Customs department, in a press release said that the CISF personnel intercepted a passenger bound to Dubai during the pre-embarkation security check of passengers on May 25 at the Mangaluru International Airport. They retrieved 2 pouches concealed in his underpants on the suspicion that they contained precious stones.

The passenger hailing from Kasaragod was offloaded and handed over by CISF to the Customs officers at the Airport for further investigation, the press release said.

The two pouches were found to contain 13 smaller packets with diamonds of different sizes totally weighing 306.21 carats and were valued at Rs.1.69 crores.

The passenger was arrested and produced before the Magistrate who remanded him for judicial custody.  Further investigations are in progress.
