Kundapur: This boy had an enthusiasm to study. This is the success story of the student who woke up at 5 am in the morning and delivered newspapers, worked in catering during the mid-term, summer vacation and even on the only holiday in a week, earned money and studied his subjects with the little time he had and passed the exams with distinction.

Mortar work

Kiran was pursuing arts at Kundapur Government Pre-University College and has passed with flying colours by scoring 537 marks in the division. He is the son of Babu and Girija couple, residents of Uppinakudru, both employed as mortar worker and day wage labourer respectively. Kiran’s younger sister is still in 2nd PUC and during holidays, works at a garment shop and thereby they earn their daily bread and prefer not to burden their family for education. During the occasion of land reforms, the land owner had provided a piece of land to their grandmother in which they exist within a small thatched house.

When pursuing SSLC at Uppinakudru High School, Kiran used to wake up early in the dawn, cycle door to door delivering newspapers be it winter or monsoon and yet he scored 530 marks in SSLC exams. Whenever there is a holiday, he used to accompany Rakshit and work in catering. Through the panchayat they received solar powered light under the SC/ST grant. They never applied for help anywhere and instead worked, earned money and acquired their education.

KAS dream

He desires to pursue a degree in arts next and longs to attempt the KAS examination. He is also eyeing the PSI, Panchayat Development Officer Competitive examination. Amidst this, he aims to finish a degree in arts and then complete post graduation in social work.

Proper encouragement

“If there is continuous effort and the will to study, nothing will appear as deficient. If proper encouragement is provided at home and in the college, the result also will be good,” says Kiran Uppinakudru
