DK DC calls for comprehensive efforts to eradicate drug abuse

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mullai Mugilan emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to eliminate drug abuse in Dakshina Kannada (DK) and urged officials of anti-drug cells in educational institutions to play an active role.

He was addressing the inauguration of a workshop on Saturday, July 15, at the Eric Mathias Hall in St Aloysius College aimed at making the district free from drug abuse.

During his speech, the DC expressed, “It is crucial to address the rampant drug menace highlighted by one of my teachers, particularly as students from neighboring Kerala also come here for education. I urge all stakeholders to unite and take responsibility in eradicating this problem. We should avoid relying solely on forceful measures, as they can have adverse effects. Instead, let us adopt a compassionate approach by identifying victims and providing them with counseling and support.”

He further said, “In response to the issue raised during the visit of the district in-charge minister, the district administration has held multiple meetings with officials to tackle the problem. I call upon educational institutions to move beyond a one-day observance of anti-drug activities and implement comprehensive measures. The police department and district administration are fully committed to supporting efforts to combat this menace. Teachers play a vital role in identifying vulnerable students, as parents may not always be aware of their children’s activities. It is crucial to preserve the anonymity of victims and work collectively to save the lives of our youth. We must recognize that drug addiction is a psychological disorder that requires prompt treatment.”

“I emphasize the importance of effective internal mechanisms within educational institutions, where anti-drug cells must implement all necessary measures. The district administration alone cannot effectively address the issue without the active involvement of anti-drug cells in colleges and the wider community. Institutions must devise strategies and strive for permanent solutions to this problem. Our goal is to make the entire district drug-free by August 15,” he added.

Additionally, the DC revealed that the district administration is planning to implement an online mechanism to combat the drug menace and has approached several software companies for assistance.

The event was attended by Probationary DC Mukul Jain, District Health Officer Dr. Kishore Kumar M, Dr. Sadishiva Shanbaugh, social worker Lydia Lobo, senior psychiatrist Dr. Ravish Tunga, psychiatrist Dr. Sunil Kumar, and other dignitaries.
