Mangaluru/Udupi: The district administration in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi is now allowing family members to cremate a Covid-19 victim in their own property.
While earlier the administration itself was conducting the funeral, it has now been decided that if family members of deceased person want to hold the last rites in their property the same can be allowed. However, the last rites have to be held as per the Covid 19 protocol and family members are not permitted to touch the body.
Amid the rising fatalities in both the districts, the move will help reduce the burden on the government system.
Madan Mohan, assistant commissioner of Mangaluru, however, stated that body of the deceased person will not be allowed to be taken to outstation districts.
Udupi district health officer Sudhirchandra Sooda said that cremation on family land will be allowed if there is no opposition from locals.
