Manipal: A team of Urology experts at Kasturba Medical College (KMC) Hospitals have successfully operated a 60-year-old woman patient and removed the largest stone from the urinary tract ever.

The stone measuring 11.5 X 7.5 cm and weighing 672 gms was removed through Open Cystolithotomy surgery under the guidance of Professor, HOD of the Department of Urology, and Deputy Medical Superintendent, KMC Manipal Dr. Padmaraj Hegde and a team of doctors including Dr. Anshuman, Dr. Nisha, Dr. Vivek Pai, and Dr. Krishna.

The patient was discharged on the second day of the surgery.

The woman was suffering from urinary tract-related issues for the past six years. She visited a nearby hospital for diagnosis. Recently, she visited KMC Manipal and did a CT scan as per the doctor’s suggestion. The scanning reports revealed that the stone had covered the urinary tract completely and that the stone had grown significantly large.

The experts who treated the woman said that by far this was the largest urinary tract stone that was removed from a woman patient in the world.

The reports suggest that the largest stone removed was at KEM Hospital, Mumbai which weighed 528 gms. But the one removed in Manipal has surpassed it.

Meanwhile, MD. Professor, Department of Radio Diagnosis and Imaging, KMC Manipal, Dr. Anand R Venugopal, and Medical Superintendent Dr. Avinash Shetty have congratulated the team of doctors.
