Bengaluru: The Karnataka high court awarded a two-year jail sentence to senior Kannada actress Abhinaya in connection with a dowry harassment case.

Abhinaya’s brother Srinivas’s wife Lakshmidevi had filed the dowry harassment case Chandralayout police station in the year 2002. In her complaint, it is mentioned that her family had given Rs 80,000 cash and 250 grams gold ornaments as dowry when she got married to Srinivas in 1998. However the family began harassing her demanding further Rs one lakh in dowry. Later they sent her to her maternal home.

In 2012, the Magistrate court had sentenced all the five accused in the case to 2 years imprisonment but the district court acquitted them.

Laxmi approached the high court, challenging the district court order on acquitting the accused. Abhinaya’s father Ramakrishna and Srinivas passed away during the hearing of the case. The other accused her mother Jayamma and brother Cheluva too have been awarded a jail sentence.
