Mangaluru: KSRTC’s proposal to introduce double-decker buses had become a major topic of discussion in the transportation sector a few years back and presently, the proposal has been revived and in this connection, KSRTC has come forward to collect people’s opinion regarding this.

The corporation should have introduced the double-decker buses almost two years ago.  But companies including Volvo, Leyland, Tata and others did not show interest in this concern. Due to this reason, the proposal ended up in the corner. Presently, KSRTC has shown special interest in this regard and has shown interest to introduce double-decker buses of the 90’s. Accordingly, the corporation has come forward to gather opinion from the people concerning on what routes this service may be introduced and if the service is applicable to the roads here.

Notice from the ministry

A few years back, the road transport and highway ministry had passed out a notice stating that double-decker bus service should be encouraged. Accordingly, KSRTC had identified some routes which also included Mangaluru. The corporation had overall identified five routes including Bengaluru – Mangaluru, Bengaluru – Mysuru, Bengaluru – Hyderabad, Bengaluru – Chennai, Bengaluru – Hubballi to introduce the service.

What is a double-decker bus?

This bus has two floors (decks). Because of this, it has the capacity to transport more passengers. But the engine capacity and management is different from a single-deck bus. In 1990, BMTC had introduced double-decker buses within Bengaluru city limits.

Rs 5 crore granted in the budget

Karnataka State Tourisms Development Corporation (KSTDC) will be introducing double-decker buses for tourists to enjoy the beauty of Hampi. By the end of this year, double-decker buses may begin functioning between Mysuru – Hampi. When H D Kumaraswamy was the Chief Minister, he had sanctioned Rs 5 crore for the introduction of 6 double-decker buses. Presently, tenders have been issued and the service is expected to begin in a few months.

Under negotiation

Talks are being held with bus manufacturing companies in connection to the double-decker bus requirement. No final decision has been taken in this regard. We will gather people’s opinion regarding which routes this service should be introduced – Shivayogi C Kalasad, KSRTC Managing director
