Shivamogga: Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) M Muthuraj said that drug abuse causes serious physical, emotional and social problems by trapping an addict in a vicious cycle of use and disuse.
He was addressing the police faculty at the inauguration of the one-day workshop on control of drug menace by Regional Resource and Training Center in relationship with the Shivamogga police office at the DAR Hall on Wednesday, July 25.
Many commit crime due to the effect of psychoactive drug, ganja (cannabis). Prolonged drug abuse has dangerous effects on the nervous system of the human body and thereby affecting the mental ability of the addicted people, the ASP said.
Muthuraj said that police have a big role in controlling drug menace. “Reforming a drug addict is a difficult task. Thus, the police work force should make honest attempts to stop the supply of drugs like ganja and afeem (opium) to the people. We have to create awareness and give timely advice at the grassroots levels about the harms of drugs,” he included.
“The department is also bringing issues to light among farmers to stop the cultivation of ganja,” Muthuraj included.
