Bengaluru: The monsoon is expected to arrive in Karnataka on June 2 this year, a week earlier than usual. Typically, the monsoon reaches the state around June 7 or 8.
On Saturday, heavy rains lashed the Old Mysore region, including the capital city of Bengaluru. In Hassan city and various parts of the district, there was torrential rain accompanied by thunderstorms, indicating a promising start to the monsoon season.
Chamarajanagar also experienced good rainfall. In the Bengaluru Rural district, Hosakote, and Chikkaballapur district, there was light rain.
Mandya district witnessed heavy rains with strong winds in the evening. In Srirangapatna, a hotel roof on the main street collapsed due to a thunderstorm in the evening.
The weather department has forecasted monsoon rains in some parts of the state from Sunday, with conditions favoring the full onset of the southwest monsoon in Karnataka over the next 2-3 days.
This year, the monsoon is set to arrive in the first week of June itself. Meteorologists have stated that an early onset often leads to higher-than-average rainfall for the year.
