Today is Earth Day, and Google has designed a thought-provoking doodle to warn us of climate change’s catastrophic effects. The Doodle portrays the impact of climate change in four distinct locations around the world, using real time-lapse data from Google Earth Timelapse and other sources.
“Using real time-lapse imagery from Google Earth Timelapse and other sources, the Doodle shows the impact of climate change across four different locales around our planet. Stay tuned throughout the day to view these scenes, each remaining on the homepage for several hours at a time,” said the search engine giant.
Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Sermersooqin Greenland, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, and the Harz Forests in Germany’s Elend are featured in the animation. Every hour, these animations will change.
Mt Kilimanjaro will be the subject of the first animation. From 1986 until 2020, Google has highlighted the glacier retreat at the mountain’s summit. The following animation uses Sermersooq imagery to depict the impact of climate change from 2020 to 2020.
The Great Barrier Reef is depicted in the third animation. From March to May 2016, it depicts coral bleaching on Lizard Island. The image of Harz Forests appears in the final animation. From 1995 to 2020, it shows how these woods were decimated by bark beetle infestation as a result of rising temperatures and severe drought.
Every year on April 22nd, Earth Day is commemorated. The day raises awareness about environmental protection and conservation around the world. In 1970, the first Earth Day was observed. Earth Day was celebrated in 141 countries throughout the world in 1990.
