Chikkaballapur: After a period of calm, mild earthquake tremors were felt again in the Chikkaballapur taluk on Wednesday morning, raising anxiety levels among the locals.
Tremors were reported from areas in and around the Adgal Gram Panchayat. According to locals, the earth began shaking at around 3 am in the early morning. Several walls developed cracks due to the shaking. Many residents were woken up from their sleep and ran out of their houses.
The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Authority has confirmed that the area was hit by a low-intensity earthquake of 2.6 magnitude on the Richter scale. The earthquake originated at a depth of 12 from the epicenter at Addagal Village, it said.
Deputy Commissioner R Lata asked the residents of the district not to worry.
A series of earthquakes in the Chikkamani and Shidlaghatta in Chikkaballapur talukas of the Chikkaballapur district in the last year had terrified people. Geologists do not have a clear explanation for these earthquake events. According to some, the tremors may have started as a result of earth’s layers settling down as the water percolates into the ground from the record-breaking raifall received last year.
