ED notice to Geelani ‘unrealistic’: Hurriyat

Srinagar: Hardline Hurriyat Conference today termed the Enforcement Directorate’s notice to its chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani as “biased and unrealistic”.

The ED had served the notice on December 13 to Geelani to appear before it on Monday for adjudication proceedings related to a foreign exchange violation case involving 640823.00₹ “illegally” possessed by him in 2002. “The notice to Geelani is biased and unrealistic. Indian authorities have crossed all democratic, constitutional and moral limits,” the Hurriyat Conference said in a statement here.

During the 2002 Income Tax (I-T) raids at Geelani’s residences and those of his close relatives, no currency or any objectionable material was recovered, he claimed, adding that this was also conveyed to the authorities concerned through his counsel. The foreign currency was seized during an I-T raid at his residence in Srinagar’s Hyderpora area in 2002.
