Puttur: Two workers who were indulged in repair work of electricity supplying poles met with an electric shock here in the city and suffered serious injuries on Saturday Dec 15th.
Binding work was being done on the LT in front of the Mai De Deus Church here by the Mescom staff with assistance from a 10 member team of a contract company identified as Arvind electrical from Bengaluru.
The incident
One of the worker accidentally received and electric shock and was thrown off while the other worker who received the electric shock ended up in a sitting position on top of the electric pole itself for nearly 10 minutes.
The injured
The two injured workers are from Suralli in Kasivinahalli village in Nanjagudu taluk. Of the two workers, Ravi (19) is the one who got thrown off following the electric shock and is responding well for given treatment at a private hospital, while the other worker, Basava Nnayak (30) has suffered grievous injuries.
People object
When Basava Nayak was in the seating position of the electric pole after receiving an electric shock, the other workers attempted to climb the poles and bring their injured fellow worker with the use of ropes. During this period, Mescom failed to take any action and wasted time in giving guidelines, thereby becoming the reason for the people’s outrage. That is when the Mescom staff woke up, climbed the poles and joined in with the workers of the contracting company in bringing down the injured worker.
Since this incident took place in the heart of the city, it gave rise to a traffic block which lasted for half-an-hour. It was real challenge to take the injured to the hospital in an auto rickshaw.
No power supply
In the backdrop of repair work to be done, power supply was stopped to Puttur city and its rural areas since the morning. Even then the incident of an electric shock too place and has become a subject for much debate now.
“During the repair work, power supply had been stopped. Even then, due to the use of inverters, generators and due to the automatic change over system in them, the power returned. There is no danger. Since the worker had not taken any food since the morning, he is feeling weak. Both ae recovering. They may get discharged from the hospital within a day,” said Ramachandra Assistant Executive Engineer, Puttur
