Mangaluru: The electrification of the Konkan Railway track is expected to be completed by the end of December and electric passenger train services could be launched the same month.
The electrification of the 741-kilometre long railway track from Roha in Maharashtra and Thokur near Mangaluru began in 2017 with an estimated cost of Rs 1,100 crore.
Electrification works between Roha and Ratnagiri and between Thokur and Karwar have been completed.
Works on the 300 kilometre stretch from Ratnagiri to Karwar is presently underway. Sources said that 80 per cent of the works on this line have been completed.
The tracks from Roha to Mumbai CST comes under Central Railway and is already electrified.
Currently, the Konkan Railway Corporation Limited pays approximately Rs 300 crore annually for fuel. After electrification, the corporation will save about Rs 100 crores.
