Bakra, a 60 year old wild elephant, died when it was trapped inside a ditch at Dammanakatte Haadi in Heggada Devana (HD) Kote taluk on Thursday. The villagers said that the elephant had fallen into the ditch at around 2 am on Thursday. Since the ditch was full of mud, its tusks and legs got stuck in it and the elephant could not help itself up. The ditch, which was originally meant to prevent elephants trespassing the village, ended up killing one.
The elephant used to roam the villages of Antarasanthe, Metikuppe and Belleguppi, where the locals fondly named it Bakra because of the shape of its tusks. A few months back, Bakra had tried to kill a forest watcher named Cheluva , but he escaped with just a few injuries.
