False ‘Chaddi Gang’ robbery story causes panic in Keyyur, Unveiled by police investigation

Puttur: A woman in Keyyur sparked widespread fear after claiming that a notorious “Chaddi Gang” (underwear gang) attempted an armed robbery at her house on Tuesday night. The alleged incident was reportedly backed by a viral photo the woman shared, supposedly capturing the gang through her window.

However, police investigation soon revealed it to be a fabricated story, leading to relief and a resolution of the panic within the community.

The incident came to light after Margaret, a Kerala native, alleged that a group of masked men dressed in underwear, armed with swords, attempted a robbery. According to her, she managed to evade them and take a photo through her window. Following her report, police arrived at the scene and began an investigation.

During questioning, Puttur Circle Inspector Ravi B.S. and his team discovered discrepancies. Margaret’s phone contained the alleged “Chaddi Gang” photo, but a detailed investigation revealed it to be a two-year-old image from a Kerala newspaper, related to a scripted video shoot in Kottayam. Her phone history also revealed a high volume of crime-related videos she had watched, further casting doubt on her claims.

The incident caused widespread concern, with the village head, Keyyur Gram Panchayat President Sharath Kumar Madaav, reassuring residents of the absence of any “Chaddi Gang” in the area. Despite repeated police questioning, Margaret continued to assert the validity of her story and reacted strongly to journalists and officers during the investigation, at one point even demanding the return of her confiscated phone and threatening to involve Kerala police.

It remains unclear why Margaret fabricated the robbery story, with community members and officials alike speculating on her motive. Meanwhile, local authorities are working to ease the fears stoked by the viral photo and false robbery claims.
