Bantwala: The railway authorities, on Thursday undertook a demolition drive at Farangipete junction here with the aim of evicting shop vendors, including fish market vendors from the railways-owned property.

The authorities it is gathered had issued notices in this regard to the shopkeepers and had even given them a weeks time to vacate the place voluntarily. However, since the shopkeepers did not heed to the notice, the railway authorities, on Thursday morning arrived at the spot with police personnel and began to forcibly evict the shopkeepers

Agitated shopkeepers and gram panchayat president Ramlan opposed the forceful eviction which led to a tense situation in the area. Later, railway officials gave the shopkeepers an hour’s time to vacate the place voluntarily.

Meanwhile, Bantwala rural police beefed up the security in the area.
