Belagavi: The ongoing protests staged by sugarcane cultivators of Belagavi district demanding settlement of their dues took a violent turn on Sunday following the news of Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy’s visit cancellation.
Irked farmers broke the police cordon and barged into the Suvarna Soudha premises with a sugarcane-laden tractor all the time raising slogans against district in-charge minister Ramesh Jarakiholi and chief minister Kumaraswamy.
It may be recalled that Kumaraswamy had assured to meet the farmers on November 19 and had promised to resolve their issues. However, the last minute cancellation resulted in a violent situation here.
The police detained few of the protestors to restore law and order.
