Team Udayavani, Jul 5, 2020, 5:11 PM IST
Scientists have discovered that the fastest-growing known black hole in the Universe consumes the equivalent of the Sun’s mass every day. The massive black hole called the J2157 is five times the size of our solar system.
The study has been published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
Lead author Christopher Onken said the “The black hole’s mass is also about 8,000 times bigger than the black hole in the centre of the Milky Way”
Onken and his team discovered the black hole in 2018 and were astonished by its fast growth rate.
The team used the ESO’s Very Large Telescope in Chile to get accurate data on the black hole’s mass.
