Find solutions to address drain overflow issue in central Delhi: Atishi to officials

PTI, Jul 1, 2024, 5:21 PM IST

Delhi’s water minister, Atishi, on Monday, spearheaded an initiative aimed at preventing the overflow of a crucial drain in central Delhi during heavy rainfall. The minister, accompanied by Mayor Shelly Oberoi and senior officials, conducted an inspection of Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s (MCD) vital Drain No. 12 at ITO.

The inspection followed an unexpected deluge of 228mm of rain on June 28, which is nearly a quarter of Delhi’s average monsoon rainfall, causing the drain to overflow and resulting in significant waterlogging in the area. The inspection team included officials from PWD, Urban Development, and Flood and Irrigation Control Departments.

To prevent future incidents, Atishi instructed officials to develop both short-term and permanent solutions to manage the overflow of Drain No. 12. Mayor Oberoi emphasized the importance of ITO Chowk and nearby roads, stating that coordinated efforts among various government departments are essential to prevent waterlogging in central Delhi. Atishi confirmed the joint effort in a post on X (formerly Twitter) in Hindi, detailing instructions for immediate and long-term measures.
