First Look: New Vande Bharat sleeper train promises luxury and speed

The much-anticipated sleeper version of the Vande Bharat train, set to redefine overnight journeys, is nearly ready for its grand launch. Built at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, this fully air-conditioned train promises a comfortable and luxurious experience on longer routes ranging from 800 km to 1,200 km.

The Vande Bharat sleeper train is designed with 16 coaches, providing seating and berths for up to 820 passengers. With a top speed of 160 kmph, it’s set to slash travel times on overnight journeys. The addition of a sleeper variant broadens the Vande Bharat portfolio, which currently includes chair car variants and metro trains.

Exclusive Features for Enhanced Comfort and Safety

Key features on board the Vande Bharat sleeper train elevate both comfort and hygiene. Equipped with sensor-activated doors and touch-free bio-vacuum toilets, the train ensures minimal physical contact, enhancing passenger convenience and sanitation. Additionally, interconnecting doors between coaches offer easy passage, while talk-back units improve communication between passengers and attendants.

For first-class compartments, flight-style attendant buttons are available, making it easier for passengers to access the upper berths. Safety has also been prioritised with an advanced emergency brake system and an anti-climbing feature, which prevents coaches from piling up in case of an accident. The train is also fitted with the “Kavach” anti-collision technology, setting a new benchmark for safety in Indian Railways.

Testing Phase Underway

Before hitting the tracks, the Vande Bharat sleeper train will undergo a stringent testing phase to confirm its performance, especially at varying speeds from 90 kmph to 180 kmph. Testing will take place at the Lucknow Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and Western Railway facilities, with completion expected by November 15.

ICF General Manager U. Subba Rao highlighted the state-of-the-art amenities that distinguish the Vande Bharat sleeper from conventional overnight trains, adding that it will make a significant impact on India’s rail travel experience.

With its revolutionary design, comfort-oriented features, and enhanced safety, the Vande Bharat sleeper is set to usher in a new era of overnight travel.
