Mangaluru: The State Social Welfare Department will be implementing a first-of-its-kind Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hostel in Mangaluru for students of all communities.

The hostel will be implemented with a view of bringing together students of all communities instead of staying in community-designated hostels.

The department has decided to implement the hostels for Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG) students in five districts namely Mangaluru, Bengaluru, Mysuru, Kalaburgai, and Belagavi.

The hostel capacity will be 1000 students comprising 400 girls and 600 boys.

Initially, permission to begin Managaluru hostel with 200 students is being sanctioned, out of which, girls and boys will be 100 each. As a temporary measure, hostels at Bejai and Derlakatte will be implemented for boys and girls, separately.

Meanwhile, the department has decided to construct its own hostel building on the Mangaluru University campus, as currently, the hostel is run under rent provision.

In eight acres of land, the construction of five buildings will be completed under the supervision of the Public Welfare Department (PWD). In each building, 200 students will reside and once the building is completed, students from the rented building will be shifted to the new hostel building.

Meanwhile, study provisions for PG students will also be made.

Speaking to Udayavani, Deputy Director (Education), Social Welfare Department, Dakshina Kannada, Siddalingesh Bevinamatti said, “The Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hostel will temporarily begin initially in the rented buildings of Bejai and Derlakatte with 200 student capacity (100 students each). Eligible students are requested to submit their applications”.

State Social Welfare Department Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary, in his statement to Udayavani, said, “To create an atmosphere of oneness among students coming from different communities and provide them education, the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hostel will be built in five districts. At first, it will be initiated in Mangaluru in the rented buildings and later shift to new buildings”.
