Mangaluru: A flash floods triggered by incessant rain since the last two days inundated at least 25 industries in Baikamapady Industrial area of Mangaluru. In this backdrop, Kanara Small Industries Association (KSIA), Baikampady, President Gaurav Hegde urged the government to release funds for realigning and construction of storm-water drains.
Speaking to the media Mr Hegde said that the capacity of the storm-water drain needs to be increased to facilitate easy flow of water and prevent further loss to entrepreneurs. Storm-water drains also get choked leading to flooding of the industrial area and the flooding at the industrial area has become a serious cause for loss to industries since the last couple of years.
The number of industries here has increased but it is being said that the industrialists are frustrated due to production loss because of flooding, which in turn affects the profit generation. Consequently, industries are losing customer due to the gap in supply and demand.
It is worth noting that the incessant rainfall that occurred on May 29, 2018 had adversely affected more than 70 industries at Baikampady industrial area. An estimated loss of Rs 10 crore was incurred in the form of damage to machinery, raw materials, electrical installation, structural damage and production losses.
Although the KSIA had sought compensation from the government to recover from the losses, no compensation has yet been paid to them.
