Mysuru: A district official said on Friday said that a flood caution has been issued for low-lying areas in Mysuru where water in the Kabini reservoir is nearing its most extreme limit following heavy rains this week in its catchment area.

“The district administration has issued warning to people living along the Kabini river banks and in the low-lying zones to be careful as the dam specialists are discharging water from the store as it is nearing its maximum limit,” Mysuru District Deputy Commissioner Abhiram G. Shankar said.

As on Friday morning, the dam had more than 13 TMC of water of its aggregate limit of around 16 TMC, driving the experts to discharge water from the reservoir , said Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Center (KSNDMC) Director G.S. Srinivasa Reddy.

“With the continous rains, the dam will be full to its maximum limit by Saturday. So the dam experts have chosen to discharge some water once again into the river,” Reddy told the media here.

Unstopping rains since the beginning of Southwest monsoon on June 4 in the catchment areas have expanded the water levels in four dams – Kabini, Krishna Raja Sagara, Hemavathi and Harangi in the Cauvery river basin in the state’s southwest district.

In the past 24 hours, Mysuru got a most extreme precipitation of 6 cm.

In the past week, Dakshina Kannada got a normal of 53.4 cm of rain, Uttara Kannada 34.7 cm, Udupi 52.3 cm, Hassan 52.3 cm, Kodagu 57.6 cm and Chikkamagaluru 30 cm, as per the information from KSNDMC.

Over the coming week, the monsoon will have a quelled movement in the state, with the intensity of rains going down, Reddy said.
