Four Eminent Personalities to Receive New Year Award from Manipal Institutions

Manipal: The Academy of General Education (AGE), Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal Education and Medical Group (MEMG), Manipal Media Network Ltd. (MMNL), and Dr. TMA Pai Foundation will confer the New Year Award on four distinguished achievers on January 11 at 5:30 PM at KMC Greens.

This event aims to celebrate and honour outstanding individuals from diverse fields who have made remarkable contributions and provided distinguished services to society.

Here are the details of the awardees:

Justice P. Vishwanath Shetty

Justice P. Vishwanath Shetty was born on May 2, 1944, in Udupi. After completing his education at St. Mary’s Higher Primary School, Board High School, MGM College, and Law College, he began his legal career in 1966 under the guidance of Advocate General Tumbe Krishna Rao. He co-founded Shetty-Hegde Associates in 1971 and mentored around 20 junior advocates. From 1971 to 1978, he was a part-time lecturer at Bengaluru’s Government Law College.

Justice Shetty served as a member of the Karnataka State Bar Council four times and as its president from 1989-91. He played a pivotal role in establishing the National Law School and was an academic and executive board member. Representing Karnataka at the Bar Council of India, he served as a High Court judge from 1995 to 2006. He held key positions, including president of the Karnataka Judicial Academy and the Karnataka Legal Services Authority. Justice Shetty also participated in various international conferences and served as Karnataka Lokayukta in 2017.

Tekkar Yashwant Prabhu

A pioneer in banking and a social worker, Tekkar Yashwant Prabhu was born on December 30, 1950, in Uppinangady, Puttur taluk. Son of Tekkar Venkatesh Prabhu and Sharada Prabhu, he completed his education at Uppinangady’s Board Higher Primary School, Board High School, St. Aloysius College in Mangaluru, and BMS Law College in Bengaluru. Prabhu started his career in 1970 with Canara Bank and became a General Manager.

During his 36-year career, Prabhu gained expertise in corporate credit, treasury, foreign exchange, and international business. He supervised Canara Bank’s Hong Kong operations for three years and handled zonal office duties in New Delhi. As Executive Director of Union Bank of India, he initiated major reforms and later served as Chairman and Managing Director of Oriental Bank of Commerce. He was also Chairman of Dhanlaxmi Bank for three years and remains active as an independent director and financial expert on several corporate boards.

Dr. Vasundhara Doraswamy

Dr. Vasundhara Doraswamy, an iconic figure in Bharatanatyam, is the founder and director of Vasundhara Performing Arts Center (VPAC) in Mysuru. A choreographer and dance teacher, she has devoted over five decades to Indian classical dance, bringing notable innovations by integrating yoga and martial arts into Bharatanatyam.

Hailing from Moodbidri and raised in Mysuru, Dr. Doraswamy blended tradition with modernity in her art. She earned her PhD in 1988 for research on the connection between yoga and Bharatanatyam under the mentorship of Pattabhi Jois. She also holds a postgraduate degree in Janapada, with expertise in martial arts such as Thang-Ta and Kalaripayattu.

Her significant contributions include incorporating Yakshagana music into Bharatanatyam and presenting Samaveda through dance in 1997 at Guruvayur. Recognized with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, she has represented India at cultural festivals in the US, Australia, France, and England.

Dr. P. Mohan Rao

Dr. P. Mohan Rao, a veteran physician and cardiologist, was born in Udupi in 1940. He earned his MD in General Medicine and completed a fellowship at the Indian Society of Electrocardiology (FISE). He held key positions, including President of the Bangalore chapter of the Cardiological Society of India (1991-1992) and Vice President of the Indian College of Cardiology (1997-1998).

Dr. Rao began his career as a physician and cardiologist at the Southern Railway Hospital, Madras, from 1964-1982. He later served as Medical Superintendent for the Indian Railway Construction Company in Iraq from 1982-1986. He was the Chief Medical Officer at Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. from 1986-1998 and continued as a medical advisor until 2005.

In 2000, he established the MVJ Medical College and Research Hospital in Hoskote, a 900-bed institution where he serves as Executive Director. Dr. Rao has also served as President of the Karnataka branch of the Indian Medical Association and the Indian Association of Occupational Health.
