Freedom fighter, centenarian Vasu Shetty no more

Katapadi: Freedom fighter P Vasu Shetty of Katpadi Achchada (108) passed away at his residence on January 23.
Originally from Padubidri, Vasu Shetty moved to Mumbai at the age of 9 and was employed at a hotel. After working for the Tata group for 9 years, he worked as a mechanic at Dadar BEST depot.
In his 30s, he actively engaged himself in India’s freedom struggle movement. Being in Mumbai, he participated in marches of many leaders including Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Gandhiji, and Subhas Chandra Bose for India’s freedom.
He returned to his village after retirement and started farming. Several local organizations have recognized and honored him for his contribution to the nation’s freedom from the British rule.
