Every year, on January 15, India commemorates Army Day—a day of national pride and remembrance. It is a time to honour the valour, sacrifice and unwavering dedication of the Indian Army. It is one of the largest, and most respected, fighting forces in the world. This year, as the Indian Army marks its 77th anniversary, the celebrations carry a special significance, reflecting the nation’s growing strength and its unwavering commitment to self-reliance in defence.
Why Is Army Day on January 15?
Army Day is celebrated on January 15 to mark a pivotal moment in India’s history. In 1949 this day, Lieutenant-General Kodandera M Cariappa took charge as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief (C-in-C) of the Indian Army from General Francis Butcher, who was the last British C-in-C. This historic event symbolized India’s transition to complete Independence and self-governance in matters of defence.
March Towards Aatmanirbharta
The Indian Army’s journey since 1949 has been one of remarkable transformation. From its early days of relying heavily on imported equipment, the Indian Army has steadily progressed towards self-reliance in defence production. This pursuit of Aatmanirbharta has gained significant momentum in recent years, driven by the vision of a strong and secure India that is capable of defending its sovereignty and interests.
Latest Strides to Self-Reliance
§ Indigenous Weapon Systems: The Indian Army is increasingly equipping itself with indigenously developed weapon systems. Seven recent examples include the successful testing of the Nag Mk-2 anti-tank guided missile, induction of the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH), Dhruv, and the development of the Arjun Main Battle Tank (MBT)
§ ‘Make-in-India’ Initiatives: The government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative has spurred domestic defence manufacturing, with Indian companies playing a greater role in producing weapons, ammunition and equipment for the armed forces
§ Technology Transfers/Joint Ventures: India is actively pursuing technology transfers and joint ventures with global defence companies to acquire advanced technologies and build domestic manufacturing capabilities
§ Focus on R&D: Increased investment in research and development (R&D) is fostering innovation in defence technology, leading to the development of cutting-edge weapon systems and equipment
§ Defence Corridors: The establishment of defence corridors in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu aims to create specialized zones for defence manufacturing, attracting investment and boosting production.
Army Day 2025: A Celebration of Strength & Self-Reliance
This year’s Army Day celebrations, taking place for the first time in Pune, are a testament to India’s growing military prowess and its commitment to self-reliance. The parade at the Bombay Engineering Group and Centre will showcase the Indian Army’s latest weaponry, including the K9 Vajra-T self-propelled howitzer, the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher and the recently inducted swarm drones.
Beyond the display of military might, Army Day, 2025, also serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave soldiers who safeguard the nation’s borders. It is a day to express gratitude to the men and women in uniform who put their lives on the line to ensure the safety and security of every citizen.
As India continues its march towards self-reliance in defence, Army Day, 2025, stands as a symbol of national pride and a tribute to the indomitable spirit of the Indian Army. It is a celebration of strength, courage and the unwavering commitment to protecting the nation’s sovereignty.
