Further fall in groundwater level

Sullia/Kundapur: In comparison to last year, there is a considerable drop in groundwater table this year. This holds true to both, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts.
Considering the groundwater level of the month of March in 2018 and 2019, a drop of close to 1.3 meters has been observed. In Udupi, the water level which was at 8.92 meters in 2018 has now dropped to 9.06 meters. With another two months of summer in line, the water might as well disappear.
Maximum fall
Taking into account the stats of 5 years it can be observed that there is a great drop in the groundwater level. The graph is only depicting a fall in consecutive years. In 2018, the groundwater level in Mangaluru taluk was at 18.03 meters, but in 2019 it has dropped to 21.09 meters. In Puttur, the groundwater level has dropped from 10.99 meter to 12.4mts, in Belthangady from 13.54mts to 13.72mts, in Bantwal from 10.16mts to 11.54mts and in Sullia from 11.58mts to 12.54mts. Considering the month of March for last year and this year, the fall in water level is by 0.98mts in Bantwal, 0.18mys in Belthangady, 3.06mts in Mangaluru, 1.41mts in Puttur and 0.87mts in Sullia.
Drop in a mere month!
Considering the months of February and March in 2019, groundwater level has dropped in four taluks. The drop is by 1.38mts in Bantwal, 1.18mts in Belthangady, 2.1mts in Mangaluru and 1.23mts in Sullia. Incidentally, in Puttur the water level has risen by 0.14mts.
1.03mts drop in the district
Considering the groundwater level for the month of March in 2018-2019 and according to the district stats, there is a drop of almost 1.03mts. On the district level, the water level in March 2018 was 12.94mts while in 2019 it has dropped to 14.24mts. From January to March, the water level has only been dropping.
There is a fall
“Considering the stats of a month, a fall is observed this year. There is a need to take action to conserved water,” said Janaki, Geologist, Groundwater Department, Mangaluru
