Mangaluru: Ahimsa is the chief weapon to fight against Adharma. Gandhiji’s principle that anybody can be won over through love is applicable currently as well, said AICC secretary P C Vishnunathan.

He was speaking at the celebration of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary organized by DK District Congress Committee with a Padayatra from Karavali Utsav ground to Town Hall on Wednesday, October 2.

Several Congress leaders including former MLAs J R Lobo and Mohiuddin Bava, MLA U T Khader, former minister Ramanath Rai, MLC Ivan D’Souza, MLC Harish Kumar and youth leader Mithun Rai took part in the procession and the leaders were holding placards, flags with charakas and raising slogans to make people aware of Mahatma Gandhi and his principles. The Congress leaders who organized the programmed claimed it to be an example for the state.

Gandhi, emperor of Indian hearts

Forum for Justice district president Dayanath Kotiyan spoke on the occasion on the topic “Thoughts on Gandhi’s life-history” and said that Gandhiji is the emperor of all Indian hearts. Westerners did not easily accept Gandhiji. The same situation is currently in India. The fight for freedom is the biggest achievement of Gandhi, he said.

“For the sake of Independence, Mahatma Gandhi went to jail 22 times. His sacrifice, contribution towards independence will always be remembered. When people from Gandhi’s native compared him to Lord Krishna, Gandhi opposed it. But recently, Narendra Modi was termed as Mahatma. We must say that there is only one Mahatma that is Gandhi and he deserves to be called Mahatma,” he pointed.

Thousands of Congress party activists took part in the rally conducted from Karavali Utsav Maidan to Town Hall which proceeded via the M G Road, through Bunts hostel, Ambedkar Circle, Hampankatta and finally reached the town hall.
