Geethartha Chinthane 09: Doubt arises when there is an even split

It is natural to wonder why there was so much confusion regarding knowledge before the incarnation of Veda Vyasa. In Krita Yuga, 100% of the people were virtuous (sajjanas). At that time, there was no need for an army, police, or defense, and no doubts existed. In Treta Yuga, 75% of the people were virtuous. Even with such a large majority, there was no room for doubt. Although the number of virtuous people will drastically decline in Kali Yuga, doubts still did not arise. However, doubts surfaced only in Dwapara Yuga. This was because the ratio was 50-50—an equal number of virtuous (Sajjana) and wicked people (Durjana). This equality led to confusion about which side was right.
As mentioned in the Gita, “Senayorubhayormadhye…” even Arjuna experienced doubt and confusion during the Mahabharata war. When things are evenly split, doubt naturally arises, leading to the emergence of the Bhagavad Gita. Although the Mahabharata unfolds in three dimensions—history, moral values, and the description of God—the primary focus is on God. Contrary to what some believe, these three aspects are not divided into separate sections; rather, all words in the Mahabharata simultaneously convey these three meanings.
