Geethartha Chinthane – 10: Supreme Status of Gita

Srimadacharya composed two works on the Bhagavad Gita, namely the “Bhashya” and the “Tatparya.” In “Bhashya,” he analyzed other interpretations of the Gita, addressing their authenticity and significance. Meanwhile, in “Tatparya,” he focused solely on the verses of the Gita to convey its deeper meaning.
The supreme status of the Bhagavad Gita is established because it is believed that salvation (moksha) is attainable through the teachings contained within the Mahabharata, of which the Gita is the essence. Srimadacharya did not follow the approach of simply stating his thoughts and labeling them as philosophy. Instead, he adhered to the “Anubandha Chatushtaya,” a rigorous method of philosophical analysis.
The Mahabharata not only encapsulates the essence of the Vedas but also includes teachings that are not explicitly mentioned in the Vedas. This was possible only through the grace of Lord Srimannarayana. Who else, other than the Lord Himself, could reveal what is not stated in the infinite Vedas? Therefore, with the permission of Vedavyasa, who is considered an incarnation of the Lord, the “weight” (Thulabhara) of the Mahabharata was compared with other scriptures. It is a popular saying that “what is not found here is not found in any other scripture.” It should also be understood that the true meaning of the great Vedas can only be grasped with the support of historical texts and Puranas.
