Geethartha Chinthane – 115: Sorrow vanishes when viewed from long-term perspective

Team Udayavani, Dec 6, 2024, 9:10 AM IST

Happiness or sorrow arising from ego is never permanent. There is no need to grieve over transient matters. For instance, when we receive crores of rupees, we celebrate, mistaking it to be eternal.

The root cause of all sorrow lies in the time frame we use for comparison. In reality, no issue in the world is too serious. For example, on the day an atomic bomb was dropped, we believed everything was over. But as time passed, the world continued its course. A recent example is the COVID-19 pandemic. Do we even remember the pain it caused now? At that time, it felt like the biggest crisis. During that emergency, the entire nation was consumed by its fear.

Since then, how many political upheavals has the country witnessed? Short-term thinking makes us feel sorrow during such times. However, when viewed from a long-term perspective, nothing seems significant. We must shift our thinking from a narrow timeframe to a broader one.

We often view a house or possession as everything. But when we are no longer there, everything appears meaningless. Krishna advises us to think from an expansive, long-term perspective. Among the various layers of the mind, he suggests giving priority to the wisdom that holds true significance.
