Geethartha Chinthane 133: Detachment with Responsibility

, Dec 23, 2024, 9:52 AM IST

While preaching the Srimad Bhagavata to Janaka Maharaja, the preacher focused solely on the king’s expressions during the discourse. This behavior irked the sages present. They thought, “He is a king; perhaps he offers material benefits. But what can we sages offer?”

Soon, news arrived that Mithila, the kingdom of Janaka, was engulfed in flames. All the sages, except Janaka, rushed to safeguard their possessions. Shortly afterward, it was revealed that the news of the fire was false.

The preacher then addressed the sages: “This is precisely why I was watching Janaka’s face while delivering the discourse. You all abandoned the sermon to protect your belongings, whereas Janaka remained here, listening with composure.”

Does this mean that Janaka Maharaja was an irresponsible man for not reacting to a fire in his palace? Certainly not. He had already ensured that proper arrangements were in place to address such emergencies. Would it have been practical or necessary for him to personally extinguish the fire?

Janaka’s behavior exemplifies a delicate balance—being free from attachment, carrying out one’s responsibilities with diligence, and maintaining equanimity. These qualities must coexist, with an awareness of the fine lines that separate them. Achieving such harmony requires consistent practice, through which it becomes effortless.
