A mirror does not create an image; it only reflects what already exists. In this context, Upādhi (limiting adjunct) is compared to a mirror. When an object exists, its shadow is visible; when the object is absent, the shadow is also unseen—but does that mean the shadow never existed? Even when the Upādhi is destroyed, the reflection does not cease to exist. The reflection was always there; when the mirror appeared, the reflection became visible again.
The Supreme Being (Bimba – the original source) is omnipresent, while we are not. What is the Upādhi? It is the physical body. If a mirror breaks, we may say that the reflection disappears, but the body we refer to here is not the physical body—it is the Svarūpa Deha (the true spiritual form), which is eternal. Neither the Supreme Being (Bimba – God) nor the Svarūpa Deha of living beings can ever be destroyed. The mirror exists, and so does the reflection.
Since the Supreme Being (Bimba) is omnipresent, the reflection is never separate from it. There is no destruction of the presence of Bimba. The Jīvātma (individual soul) is indestructible, so there is no need for fear or worry. The physical body perishes, just like a mirror can break, but that is only the material body. The Svarūpa Deha remains as a form of divine consciousness. The Bimba (original source), the mirror, and the reflection are all distinct from each other. In life, the Jīvātma is not an Upādhi to itself—it is the reflection of the divine.
