Geethartha Chinthane 23: Love for God Instead of Love for Others

While explaining dharma, it is stated, “bhagavadaradhanameva paramo dharmaha,” not “bhagavatpooja eva paramo dharmaha.” There is a specific significance in the word “aaradhane.” Generally, the term “aaradhane” is used in the context of Gurus. The word “aaradhane” implies more than just worship; it refers to an instrumental or devotional act. Rituals like mangalarathi, naivedya, alankara, etc., are expressions of dharma. Facilitating education, imparting knowledge, and doing good deeds are also considered forms of aaradhane.

“Aaradhane” means “santhusteekarana” (to bring satisfaction). Any work done in a manner that pleases God results in sanctity. Usually, people work for the love of others, but instead of seeking love from someone, place God in that position. The Upanishads mention that everyone acts out of love for themselves (aathmanasthu kamaya sarvam priyam bhavathi…). Therefore, it is better to work out of love for God rather than for oneself.

Instead of asking God for anything, one should express, “I desire nothing else but You.” This is akin to how Anjaneya desired nothing but Lord Rama, leading Rama to give himself entirely to Anjaneya (swathmapradanamadhikam pavanathmajasya…).
