Geethartha Chinthane – 80: Inculcating values begins from home

In today’s society, children often feel pressured to own certain items like iPhones if they see their classmates with them. Similarly, children who go to school in cars may cause envy among those who arrive on scooters or bikes. This pressure for parity extends into newer realms like 3G, 4G, and now 5G, and the market continuously introduces new models of vehicles like Benz and Toyota, encouraging individuals to seek more attractive possessions. This trend can even be seen in the construction of houses, where the drive to outdo others in terms of elegance and appeal continues.
Influences in society operate at two levels: intrinsic and extrinsic. Despite our inherent characteristics, external influences dominate, causing people to increasingly feel they must measure up to others. The primary objective at the social level has shifted to maintaining status, and the foundation of this desire lies in the family unit. When women, as trendsetters in the household, prioritize status, men tend to support them, often feeling pressured to earn more. Women have a significant role in curbing this trend and setting realistic values, deciding that a justified level of earning is sufficient for well-being. When they take this stance, it helps shape value-based decisions within the family and beyond.
