Geethartha Chinthane – 81: Outward concern, inner greed for power

The Mahabharata war was initially proclaimed as a battle for righteousness, a fight against injustice. After their period of exile, the Pandavas were recognized, leading Duryodhana’s faction to claim that the Pandavas had broken their pact. Though the stated purpose was to combat injustice, Arjuna begins to voice his remorse over the violence, wondering about the consequences of killing so many people.
In retrospect, Krishna alone appears truly committed to the mission of restoring righteousness, while others seem motivated by the promise of reclaiming their kingdom. The true purpose of the battle, in essence, was the re-establishment of righteousness by Krishna and Bhima. For others, especially those expecting a kingdom, it was a matter of responsibility if they won, but not if they lost. The underlying motivation for many was self-serving, a subtle hint at the hunger for power beneath a superficial concern for society.
When individuals speak of societal concerns but seek comfort in the idea of ruling, the value of family and duty begins to dissolve. Arjuna’s reluctance reflects an understanding that even with victory, joy remains unfulfilled if not shared with loved ones. In his mind, it’s not the kingdom alone but the presence of family and allies that brings true satisfaction.
