Geethartha Chinthane – 88: Finding root cause of problem

In the second chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, the first verse spoken by Krishna serves as a guide for all problem solvers: Kutastva—”Where did it come from?” Just as a doctor’s first question to a patient is, “Where did this originate?” knowing the root cause is essential for effective treatment. Only when the source of an illness is identified can the remedy be accurate and effective. From this initial response itself, Krishna is seen as a healer.
Similarly, when Shankaracharya went to debate with Mandana Mishra, he first asked, “Kutastva?” or “Where did you come from?” In Krishna’s question to Arjuna, he inquires about the origin of his dilemma: “Is this a product of your own nature (swabhava)? Or is it influenced by external factors (prabhava)?” Krishna’s deeper question is, “Where did this mental impurity (kashmala) come from?” The disparity between Arjuna’s usual courage and his current weakness reveals that this confusion is not his true self, as indicated in Krishna’s phrase, “Kutastva kashmalam idam”—“Where has this impurity come from?”
Even today, when investigating a mistake or crime, tracing its origin is a method followed by crime departments. Krishna’s philosophy—Sri Krishna Siddhanta—emphasizes that a problem can be effectively resolved only when its root cause is addressed. This principle has proven successful, offering insight into the treatment of both physical and mental ailments.
