Geethartha Chinthane – 90: “Fix Yourself” – The message of Bhagavad Gita

We previously noted that even minor issues, though small (kshudra), cannot be overlooked. Another interpretation is that such trivialities, akin to childishness, may be natural for ordinary people but should not apply to the wise. Krishna urges Arjuna to cast aside this faint-heartedness, instructing him not simply to leave it unattended but to overcome it. By saying “let go” of this weakness, Krishna implies that this lack of resolve is unnatural and therefore needs correction. He questions: is this weakness inherent, or is it something that can be discarded? This core idea, which Krishna conveys, can be considered the essence of the Gita.

The verse that encapsulates this message is: uddhared atmanatmanam natmanam avasadayet | atmaiva hy atmano bandhuh atmaiva ripur atmanah (Chapter 6, Verse 6)

The message is clear: “Elevate yourself by your own efforts.” This theme, first introduced by Krishna, has since been echoed by philosophers throughout history. It is also why the Gita’s 18th chapter culminates on this note. Krishna explores whether the problem arises from external influences, which can be corrected, or if it is an intrinsic trait, in which case the solution may not be straightforward.
