Geethartha Chinthane – 91: Technique of self-correction

Lord Krishna’s unique approach emphasizes self-correction, encouraging individuals to address their own faults. This is why he advises Arjuna to overcome his weakness himself, offering support but not interference. If Krishna had commanded, “You must fight,” as his charioteer, then the entire Bhagavad Gita might not have been necessary. Krishna’s approach is different—he leads Arjuna to resolve the issue through contemplation.

The title Paranthapa here signifies deep intellectual thought. Krishna suggests that contemplation itself is the remedy, and Arjuna, having the capacity for thought, must utilize it. True contemplation, in this context, refers to reflection upon the divine. Since Arjuna is a devout thinker, a seeker of wisdom, Krishna trusts that Arjuna can find the answers within himself. Like an ideal teacher, Krishna encourages independent thinking, understanding that a student grows only when they can seek and answer their own questions.

Krishna models this approach. He does not ask Arjuna to abandon inherent qualities, only those that are external or acquired. Krishna calls Arjuna’s hesitation hridaya daurbalya (weakness of heart) rather than intellectual weakness (buddhi daurbalya), acknowledging that Arjuna’s reservations stem not from lack of intellect but from emotional conflict. This is why Krishna focuses on strengthening Arjuna’s resolve, helping him confront his heart’s turmoil rather than providing an outright answer.
