Geethartha Chinthane 95: Gudakesha’s prayer to Hrishikesha

In the Bhagavad Gita, Arjuna tells Krishna, “I will ask questions, and you must provide answers” ( Prichchhami tvaam dharmasammoodha chetaah| 2-7). Until this moment, Krishna remains silent. Arjuna requests Krishna to guide him as a teacher (Shishyasteham shaadhi maam tvaam prapannam), surrendering to him completely. Thus, Krishna is revered as “Jagadguru,” the teacher of the world.
A disciple must first surrender to the Guru and seek guidance with humility. Arjuna prays, asking Krishna to show him the right path, one that ensures he never regrets his decisions. He seeks eternal happiness (Shreyas) over temporary pleasures (Preyas). He emphasizes that even after the war, peace of mind is more important than the pleasures of a kingdom. Inner contentment outweighs worldly achievements (Yacchokam ucchoshana mindriyaanaam | 2-8).
For a while, both remain silent. As described in the verse (Evam uktva Hrishikesham Gudakeshah Parantapah| 2-9), Hrishikesha refers to Krishna as the lord of the senses, and Gudakesha refers to Arjuna as the one who has conquered sleep, a symbol of awakened consciousness and self-awareness. Parantapa is one who does not compromise his conscience for peace with others, causing discomfort only to those outside himself.
Sanjaya narrates that Arjuna, in silence, prayed to Govinda, seeking guidance for the path ahead. This highlights the greatness of the name “Govinda,” symbolizing Krishna as the guide and protector of truth.
