Mandya: The Belakavadi police, investigating a case of honour killing of a newly married couple arrested the girls’ father on Friday, November 16.

The dead bodies of the couple – Nandeesh (26) and Swathi (19), both residents of Krishnagiri in Hosur were found floating in river Cauvery, near Shivanasamudra in Mandya district on Wednesday, November 14. Police suspected it to be a case of honour killing, since the hands and legs of both the victims were tied with ropes.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Nandeesh and Swathi were in a relationship with each other for nearly two years. However, when Swathi’s father Srinivas got a whiff of her affair with a Dalit boy he kept a strict watch on her movements. In August this year, Swathi somehow managed to leave home on the pretext of collecting her transfer certificate from the college and later eloped with Nandeesh.

The couple got married and maintained distance from both the families till recently, when Swathi was spotted at a public event in Hosur by one of her relatives. He notified Srinivas who along with four others rushed to the spot. After a lot of persuasion, Srinivas managed to convince the duo to go with him to the nearby police station where they could work out a compromise.

However, he later took them to the Shivanasamudra falls here where they assaulted Nandish and threw his body into the river. Even Swathi was not spared as the couple had brought shame to the family, informed the police.
