Geethartha Chinthane 142: Who is a “Dheera”?

Team Udayavani, Jan 1, 2025, 10:48 AM IST

Every verse in the Gita is complete, like “Poornamadah Poornamidam”. Just as childhood and old age are natural, so is the transition of the body. One should grieve only when something unnatural occurs. For instance, there is no sorrow if a person dies at 100 years, but an untimely death due to an accident causes grief because it seems unnatural. However, Krishna explains that even such events are natural and inevitable.

The Gita calls those who reflect deeply on the thought “Nothing belongs to me” and find joy in this realization as “Dheera”. This understanding doesn’t come instantly; it requires consistent practice. Repeated contemplation makes this truth seep into the mind. The process of Abhyasa (practice) leads to mastery. As psychology states, “What you repeatedly think about becomes a fact in your mind.” Similarly, worship and meditation lead to attaining the object of one’s focus.

If meditation is done incorrectly, correcting it becomes difficult. Just like vehicles are fitted with governors or speed limits to ensure safety, practices in life should guide us toward truth for protection. Speed can be beneficial but also dangerous. Therefore, one must focus on the truth. Understanding that everything is natural and everyone experiences these stages equally eliminates sorrow.
